Le Fou Frog-Kansas City, Missouri

My latest food exploration took me to Le Fou Frog, a french restaraunt in Kansas City, Missouri. Le Fou Frog is located at 400 E. 5th Street. The outside of the building really doesn't do the restaraunt justice and, to tell you the truth, would probably be something I'd pass up if I didn't know what it was.

Upon walking into the restaraunt, we were greeted by a nice young hostess and seated. The atmosphere is relaxing and gives the visitor a small taste of french culture. The building itself gives the restaraunt character with it's worn wooden floors and haphazardly placed wall decor. Our table was directly under a wonderful skylight with a chandelier of candles.

We were quickly brought our drinks to which I stayed with my usual iced tea. We were presented with an amuse-bouche which means 'that which amuses the mouth.' This particular amuse-bouche was cantelope wrapped in pancetta which is a thin, dry-cured meat of sorts with a touch of some sort of dark sauce. The taste was interesting but not bad. It definitely amused the mouth with all sorts of flavors!

I ordered a salad which was very simple and classic, though very pleasing to the eye. It was decorated with curls of carrot. The dressing was good. However, the taste of the greens was a bit too earthy.

Then, I ordered the pork strip loin. It was served on a bed of mashed potatoes, garnished with a few cooked vegetables and drizzled with a red wine sauce. The taste was amazing and succulent!

Next was dessert. I chose their chocolate mousse. It was served in a bit of a caramelized cookie on top of a pond of chocolate syrup and decorated with some chocolate shavings and fresh, cut strawberries. This was probably the most enjoyable part of the meal. The taste was extraordinary and light!

Before the presentation of our very large bill, we were served some lovely chocolate truffles on the house. They were very rich...but incredibly good!

Now the rankings.

4= Excellent, 3= Pleasant, 2= Fair, and 1= Poor.

Food I would give this a solid 4. The taste of the food here was above and beyond anything you'd have on a regular day.

Service This would be a 4. The waiter was good at explaining the menu and each course of the meal and was pleasant and attentive.

Ambiance I would definitely rate this a 4. It was very relaxed and sort of romantic and quiet.

Beverage Selection I would also rate this a 4. Though, I stuck with my regular Iced tea, their menu for beverages was quite impressive.

Cleanliness A 4, of course.

Kid Friendly I would rate this a 1. Not as a hit on the restaraunt but because this isn't a place you'd want to take the kids. This is "put on your nice dress and have a special evening out" place. I would not recommened making this restaraunt a family outing.

Value for Money I would give a 2. Even though the food was good, paying $100 for a meal of the sort for two is a bit pricey. I would've been pleased with a bill totalling about $50-$75 for two people.

Overall, I would rank this restaraunt at a 4 and would recommend it to anyone! If you'd like to look into Le Fou Frog a bit more, you can visit their website at www.lefoufrog.com. Try it out and let me know what you think!
